What to Wear for your Photo Session

What Not to Wear
What Not to Wear to a Photo Session
Let’s be honest—your photos are going to outlive your love affair with that pink hoodie or your Myrtle Beach souvenir tee. So skip the logos, cartoon characters, and flashy graphics. They might be fun now, but you probably don’t want them living on your walls or your LinkedIn profile for the next decade.
This goes for little ones too. Yes, your daughter may be in her “Frozen” era, but Elsa doesn’t need to be in your family portrait.
Avoid:
- Brand names, slogans, characters
- Busy patterns (plaid, tiny stripes, high-contrast prints)
- Neon or high-visibility colors
- Super casual wear (tank tops, sweatpants, white tees with stains)
- Overdone trends like matching white tees and jeans
In short: if you wouldn’t wear it to a nice dinner or a job interview, it probably doesn’t belong in your photo session.
What To Wear for Portraits
Your session is a celebration of you. Let your outfit reflect that.
Choose:
- Solid, muted tones (earthy neutrals, deep gem tones, monochromes)
- Well-fitting pieces that flatter your shape and help you feel confident
- Sleeves, if you’re self-conscious about arms (it’s a game-changer!)
- Long skirts or flowy dresses—they move beautifully on camera
- Soft hairstyles (avoid ponytails unless it’s your signature look)
- Coordinated—but not matching—family palettes (2–4 complementary colors)
Start your family outfit planning with one item that has multiple colors (a dress, a scarf), and build everyone else’s look around that.
For Headshots and Personal Branding Sessions
Since I’m bringing the studio to you, we have the flexibility to make this experience even more tailored. You don’t need to navigate traffic or weather—just have your outfits ready and a bit of space cleared, and I’ll do the rest.
For Women:
- Necklines matter: choose round or modest cuts to highlight your face
- Bring at least one structured dress
- Neutrals are your friend—but a little pop of color can work if it’s on brand
- Avoid collars unless it’s part of your daily look
- Keep makeup soft and classic
- Bring your jewelry—I’ll help style you
- Not sure? I’ll help you choose.
For Men:
- Bring options: shirts, jackets, ties
- Stick with classic neutrals (black, grey, navy, taupe)
- Consider a fun piece if it reflects your personality or brand
- Clean shave or trim your beard (especially before I arrive, if we’re shooting later in the day)
Why All This Matters
Simple: because your face should be the star. Not your outfit. The goal is timeless, flattering, and unmistakably you. These guidelines aren't here to stifle your style—but to spotlight it, authentically and beautifully.
And remember: this is going to be fun. You’re in good hands, and I’m coming to you to make it as effortless and enjoyable as possible.
